The Illinois State Police is investigating what appears to be a suicide at the Madison County Jail in Edwardsville. 55-year old, Kenneth W. Simpson of Maryville apparently hanged himself with his personal undergarments on Thursday morning. He was found in his cell by jail staff at around 5:30am.
Once he was found, jail staff immediately provided emergency treatment while waiting for the Edwardsville Fire Department Emergency Services. The inmate had been lodged at the county jail for a year and a half on numerous charges, including aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated unlawful restraint. Madison County Sheriff Robert Hertz says this inmate was one of 240 housed at the jail.
The inmate was charged Wednesday with solicitation to commit home invasion, solicitation to commit aggravated kidnapping, solicitation to commit residential burglary, and unlawful contraband in a penal institution. He had allegedly made a weapon while incarcerated. Hertz says this inmate had not displayed any behavior prior to Thursday's incident that would have indicated he might be suicidal.
