A Jerseyville businessman indicted by a Jersey County Grand Jury on solicitation of arson and solicitation of insurance fraud was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital Thursday night after crashing his truck in Calhoun County just hours after posting bond. Calhoun County Sheriff Bill Heffington says Robert J. Hartmann (pictured) was not breathing and did not have a pulse when emergency personnel found him at the crash site. He was revived at the scene.
The crash happened eastbound on Batchtown Road a little after 8pm. Heffingtion says there were no skid marks left behind as the truck left the roadway and went head-on into a large cotttonwood tree. Heffington says the cause of the crash is unknown, but does not believe alcohol to be a factor. Hartmann was taken to a helipad in Batchtown, where he was then airlifted to St. John's Mercy in St. Louis. Earlier in the day, Hartmann was arrested as a result of the indictment, which was brought after an investigation that shows he allegedly tried to hire a woman to set fire to a home in July in an attempt to collect insurance money. Hartman is the husband of former Jerseyville Mayor and current city council member Yvonne Hartmann.
