The Alton Police Department has begun its annual Independence Day crackdown on impaired and unbuckled drivers. The ramped up enforcement focusing on drunk and unbuckled drivers began June 23rd and runs through July 6th.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is funding the increased patrols, in an effort to decrease fatal accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the majority of those accidents happen between midnight and 3 a.m. Alton Police recommend designating a sober driver before going out and that you never let friends or family members drive while impaired.
