A group that opposes a progressive income tax has put a calculator on-line to show people how their taxes might change.  The site compares tax amounts under the 3.75 percent rate that will be in effect next year vs. tax rates proposed by the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, which is promoting a progressive tax.

“I’d say it wouldn’t be a stretch to call them the leading advocates of a progressive income tax. They did put out rates. I think (State Rep.) Naomi Jakobsson (D-Urbana) might have put out some rates, but not in legislation,” said David From, Illinois state director for the Americans for Prosperity Foundation, which put up the site.  Taxpayers type in their income and number of dependents. The results will show small increases for many taxpayers, big increases for some. From says the calculator will get people informed.

The caveat is that the site compares income taxes not from where they are now, but from where the law says they will be in 2015, and the comparison is to a proposal that is the opening position of the leading proponent of higher taxes, so if this were to become reality, the change vs. your current income tax might be different.  The Illinois Constitution requires a flat income tax; instituting a multi-rate progressive tax could be accomplished only via a constitutional amendment.
