If you own a business in Downtown Alton, you may remember an effort from a few years ago to collect paper for recycling. Volunteers would wheel 95-gallon tubs up and down the hills, collecting newspaper, copy paper, and any other paper that is now being thrown away since the program ended. A new program is being launched to help keep paper and other recyclables out of area landfills.
Frank Dwyer of the Riverbender.com Community Center says Riverbender, the Sierra Club and Alton Main Street teamed up to find a recycler to fill the void.
Single stream recycling means you just thrown all of your recyclables into the same bin, and it is separated into the proper groups once it reaches the processing plant. If you would like more information about the launch of this new effort, call 465-9850, extension 205. A pair of recycle pep rallies to kick things off will be held Friday at 2pm and 4pm.
