Immigrants’ rights groups rallied in the shadow of the state Capitol Tuesday in support of a proposal to provide illegal immigrants with the opportunity to get a drivers license in Illinois. Lawrence Benito, head of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, says hundreds of thousands of immigrants are driving illegally in Illinois – without a license or insurance – so the legislation is common sense.

Lawmakers backing the bill agree and are optimistic the bill can pass both the Illinois House and Senate during the fall veto session. State Rep. Skip Saviano (R-Elmwood Park, pictured) says the time is now to pass the bill, when suburban and Northern Illinois Republicans can be counted on to vote for the measure. The bill has yet to be assigned to a committee and has not been called for a vote in either chamber.
