The Illinois Department of Corrections is taking a stand against any potential tough on crime bills that could be filed in the state legislature this year. Michael Lane of the Illinois DOC says increasing penalties for various offenses would only futher overcrowd the state’s prisons.

Lane says there are about 49 thousand inmates in Illinois’ prisons, which are only designed to hold about 32 thousand offenders. He adds that he would like to see Governor Bruce Rauner and the state legislature come up with alternative solutions before passing additional tough sentencing bills.
