Illinois is taking steps to protect its alligator-snapping turtles. The Department of Natural Resources website says it is teaming up with other states to release 97 turtles into southern Illinois creeks in an attempt to revive the animals' declining population.
A grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service helped fund the multi-state recovery project. It will help cover the costs of tracking and monitoring the radio transmitter-equipped turtles.
