A police officer from northern Illinois was shot and killed as he reportedly pursued three suspects on Tuesday.  Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, known locally as “GI Joe” was discovered with a gunshot wound yesterday morning in Fox Lake after he told dispatch that he was pursuing the suspects on foot.

The 30-year-veteran of the Fox Lake Police Department and father of four was also found stripped of his weapon.  Heavily armed law enforcement has been searching the surrounding area since the shooting happened.  Several area schools that were placed on lockdown Tuesday afternoon are closed today, and even homeowners with dogs could not take them out, turning over the duties to local police officers.  Fox Lake is about 60 miles northwest of Chicago.
