The Illinois Republican Party is now offering Chick-fil-A gift cards to anyone who makes a donation. State GOP officials sent out an e-mail to supporters with the header, "Donate to the GOP, Get a Chick-fil-A gift card." The move is in response to a Democratic alderman in Chicago who says he will keep Chick-fil-A from building a new store in the city. That's after the company's CEO came out against gay marriage.
The restaurant chain has been the target of controversy since that remark last week. That led to protests, mostly on social media, against Chick-fil-A and the Jim Henson Company even backed out of a deal that would have placed Muppets toys in the restaurant's kid's meals. Now, there's a nationwide initiative planned for this Wednesday in support of Chick-fil-A. It's supported by the likes of former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and the Reverend Billy Graham. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts are both going to bat for Chick-fil-A. Brown says he doesn't agree with anti-gay statements made by Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy, but he maintains Boston Mayor Tom Menino shouldn't try to hinder the fried chicken shop if it wants to open downtown. Bloomberg says that trampling on the freedom to marry whoever you want is exactly the same as trampling on your freedom to open a store. Menino has joined mayors from Chicago and San Francisco in opposing Chick-fil-A, saying the franchises are symbols of intolerance.
