With Memorial Day weekend upon us, the average price for a gallon of gas in Illinois is at its highest price this year. Illinoisans can expect to pay average of $2.50 for a gallon of gas this weekend.


Carol Portman with the Taxpayers’ Federation of Illinois says the cost can be misleading.


“The retailer isn’t getting that $2.49. They’re getting something that’s less than that because there are so many taxes,” she said.

In Illinois, 31 cents per gallon goes to various gas taxes. State and local sales taxes are charged in addition and can range up to 10 percent of the total bill.


Patrick DeHaan with Gasbuddy.com says travelers in cities like Chicago and Peoria pay more because those cities can tax more.


“The cost of doing business including taxes and environmental fees really add up,” he says.


Illinois is also one of only a handful of states that charges a sales tax as well.
