There's good news for those awaiting the final approvals needed to launch a new fish processing plant in Grafton. Lawmakers have apparently cut through the last of the red tape, and work will begin in earnest to outfit the former site of Uncle Andy's Orchard on Illinois State Route 3 into a new fish processing plant. The plant will be a major link in the chain that takes Asian Carp from the Mississippi River and ships them to consumers in China.
Grafton Mayor Tom Thompson says he spoke to a government official last week, and got the good news.
A Chinese group has entered into an agreement to buy between 30 and 40 million pounds of the fish over the course of a three year contract. Thompson says the plant will utilize completely green technology, and could be used as a model for future processing plants up and down our nation's waterways that have been overrun by the pesky fish.
