The governor says Illinois’ economy is improving, but that could stall if the housing market falters. Gov. Pat Quinn used an appearance before the Illinois Association of Realtors in Springfield to boast about the state’s improving manufacturing sector and decreasing unemployment rate, but he says the housing market will help determine whether that continues.

“Those who are owners of property… they understand they have a stake in the neighborhood, they patronize local business, they go to local stores, they’re really involved in the local community. So we have to understand that that is the challenge of our time,” he says.
Illinois has put programs in place to shore up affordable housing programs, such as Welcome Home Heroes to benefit military families and the Illinois Foreclosure Prevention Network.
