Lawmakers in Springfield want schools that double as polling places to close on election days. The Houe of Representatives passed a bill encouraging schools to schedule a teacher in-service day on Election Day. State Rep. Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago) sponsored the bill and says it should be an easy decision for school boards.

“Schools schedule these in-service days years in advance, elections are clearly scheduled years in advance,” said Cassidy. “[So] there is no problem with making clear that, when you know you are going to be scheduled as a polling place, one of your many in-service days can be scheduled on that Tuesday.”
Cassidy says the measure keeps kids safe by keeping them at home and protects the rights of voters who were being asked to show ID to enter some schools. That may be school policy but it is also against election law.
