A plan to add a $1 tax per night on hotel, motel, and bed & breakfast rooms in Alton appears to be dead on arrival.  The Alton City Council Committee of the Whole heard from operators of two facilities in the city this week who opposed the proposal, which would have been used to raise money for vehicle replacement accounts in the Fire and Police Departments.

Patty Rodermund, Manager of the Atrium Hotel, says her facility services many of the local industries like aviation and the refinery, and this tax could negatively impact their ability to sell those rooms.

Jim Belot of Beall Mansion said the Bed & Breakfast industry has a high failure rate as it is, and to add a tax such as this would make it even more difficult to stay afloat.  Aldermen unanimously defeated the proposal.
