A large scale Alton Police response to a man threatening hospital personnel diffused a potentially dangerous situation Thursday morning. A soon to be father became belligerent in the obstetrics unit at St. Anthony's Health Center in Alton. He was taken into custody, and no weapon was found.
The call to Alton Police came in around 9am, and within 15 minutes, 20 year old Kory M. Bender of the 2100 block of Amelia Street in Alton had been taken into custody. Hospital spokesman Dianne Schuette describes the situation:
Schuette says at that point, security was called and police were also contacted and as a precaution, the hospital went on lock-down. Police had set up a perimeter around the hospital as a precaution, but everything was back to normal within the hour. Alton Police Chief David Hayes says Bender was taken to the Alton jail and was charged with battery and criminal trespass to real property. The baby was delivered successfully and the child and mother are doing fine.
