As we get closer to the holidays, a group is asking that you remember those serving in the military.  Operation Support Our Troops-America is ramping up their year-round care package drive with the “America Has NOT Forgotten” campaign. OSOT-America president Deb Rickert says besides collecting small comforts for deployed troops, a simple note of thanks if often what troops enjoy the most.

Part of the “America Has NOT Forgotten” campaign is a request to fly the flag at half-staff on the last Friday of each month to honor those lost in the war during that month.  While a bank in the Chicago area has been tapped as a collection point for care package items, Rickert says churches, schools and social groups across the state can start their own collection or letter writing campaign and her organization will make sure the goods get to the troops.  Items in a care package typically include:

 •   Canned pasta and soup (28-oz. or less)
 •  Granola bars
 •  Foot powder (14-oz. or less)
 •  Beef jerky
 •  Tuna
 •  Microwave popcorn
 •  Canned nuts (20-oz. or less)
 • Individually wrapped hot chocolate and coffee packets
 • One-pound bags of ground coffee
