A holiday weekend is here. That means increased traffic patrols. The target is drunk drivers, says Michael Witter, regional administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “Law enforcement will be cracking down on impaired drivers as part of the ongoing ‘drive sober or get pulled over’ enforcement campaign. I’m proud to announce Illinois has over 300 law enforcement agencies across the state who are participating in high-visibility traffic enforcement,” he said.

The enforcement effort goes through midnight Sunday. It’ll feature 100 roadside safety checks, 500 saturation patrols to catch drunk drivers and 380 nighttime saturation patrols to catch seat belt violators.
In the last five years in Illinois, 55 people were killed in crashes during the Independence Day enforcement period. 62 percent of those involved at least one driver who had been drinking, according to IDOT.
