Alton Mayor Tom Hoechst has been selected to represent the state on the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative, an organization designed to represent all of the communities along the Mississippi. Hoechst will serve on the executive committee, which includes a mayor from each of the ten states bordering the river.
Hoechst says that he hopes that this will give these communities a stronger voice in Washington D.C.
Hoechst also says that the group will addresses matters of mutual concern such as river water quality, habitat restoration, river-focused recreation and sustainable economies and celebrations of river culture and history.
The MRCTI met a month ago for the first time via a conference call and they have announced plans to meet in person in St. Louis sometime in September.
