State and local police will be cracking down on seat belt violators this week. The Illinois of Department of Transportation is partnering with local law enforcement agencies to set up more than 1,400 so-called “Safety Belt Enforcement Zones” around the state. The Alton Police Department is doing its part, promising a more visible presence not only this weekend, but heading through the end of the year and the holiday season.
Alton Police Public Information Officer Emily Hejna says their partners in law enforcement have been helpful setting up roadside safety checks during non-holiday times as well, most recently at State and Elm Street on Sunday.
There will be beefed up enforcement from now through the new year, including extra patrols, roadside safety checks and seatbelt enforcement zones.
