Illinois Route 67 through Greene County has been dedicated to honor the sacrifice of seven Greene County brothers who served in WWII. The highway is being dubbed the "Powell Brothers Memorial Highway" by Senator Sam McCann. McCann, IDOT, State Representative CD Davidsmeyer, Greene County officials, and members of the Powell family gathered Sunday to witness the dedication of the highway.
Remembered as "The Fighting Powells", the brothers all stepped forward to put their lives on the line when tyrrany threatened the world. Senator McCann says this family is an excellent example of why their generation is referred to as 'The Greatest Generation. Arthur, Earl, Fred, and George Powell served in the Navy while Adrian, Everett, and Max Powell served in the Army Air Corps, the predecessor to the modern air force. Everett was shot down in his P-47 Thunderbolt over Belgium and was held in a German prisoner of war camp for 18 months. All seven brothers survived and returned home.
