Longtime Edwardsville School District Superintendent Ed Hightower is retiring. The educator, and well-known college basketball referee, will leave following the end of the 2014-15 school year, giving the district a year to find his replacement. Hightower served as a teacher, and administrator in the Alton School District for 22 years before moving to head up the Edwardsville district in 1996.
Hightower had planned to retire three years ago, but agreed to remain on while the district dealt with difficult financial times. He will leave one year short of his latest 3 year contract. Hightower officiated in his last college basketball game in December after 36 years…32 of those in the Big Ten Conference. Hightower said at the Monday board meeting he feels the district is in a good place and the time is right for him to step down. Edwardsville School Board President Jill Bertels thanked Hightower for his many years of service and said the board would soon begin the process of finding a replacement.
