Teachers in Highland are one step closer to going on strike. The contract between the teachers and the Highland Community Unit District Number Five expired Sunday. The teachers and the district have been trying to negotiate a new deal for five months without any success.
Union representatives say 97-percent of teachers voted to strike if no deal is hammered out at a session involving a federal mediator this coming weekend. Teachers are fighting for continued health care benefits and a pay increase, among other issues. There has been a freeze on teacher pay in Highland since the 2010-2011 school year.
