Teachers in Highland are slated to hit the picket lines Thursday. The Highland Education Association rejected a contract offer with the school district on Tuesday by a vote of 138-15. The two sides are at a stalemate on issues involving pay freezes, teacher evaluations, and layoffs.
The most recent contact expired on August 31 and both sides have been meeting since April, including sessions with a federal mediator. Unless there is a last minute resolution, the teachers will hit the picket lines on Thursday and all extra curricular activities will be cancelled including all sports. No buses will run, which will impact the local Catholic school in Highland, St. Paul School, which uses the bus system for about 40 of its students.
