The Alton Multi Modal Transportation Center may be ready sooner than planned. The paperwork part of the process has captured much of the focus of city officials in recent weeks, but an important date was met, and Alton Mayor Brant Walker tells The Big Z work is progressing faster than many expected.

A $13.85-million TIGER Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation was awarded to the project in 2011. It will be a stop on the High Speed Rail system between St. Louis and Chicago, and the Madison County Board this week came out in support of the plan to keep the number of stops in the area at two – one in Alton and the other in St. Louis.
