Five Riverbend high schools are joining forces, and also competing, during two upcoming blood drives. Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Centers is sponsoring the High School Summer Challenge along with Alton High, Civic Memorial, Marquette, East Alton Wood River and Roxana on July 22 and 23.
Spokesman Tad Middleton tells the Big Z the event is an expansion of something they’ve done in the Springfield area:

Each school is competing to bring in 20 units of blood, and for that will earn a Lifesavings Grant of $250, but can also earn a dollar for each unit collected above their goal. All five schools can earn the grant if the donor comes in on behalf of the school. The school bringing in the most donors will earn bragging rights. Donation days are Friday July 22 from Noon-6pm at Trimpe Middle School in Bethalto, and Saturday July 23 from 10am to 2pm on the campus of Lewis and Clark Community College.
