Heroin use continues to take lives in the region, and Madison County has seen another record year for heroin deaths.  In 2009, Madison County reported 9 heroin deaths, in 2010 the number doubled.  In 2014 there were 26, and statistics just released by his office show 38 confirmed and another 5 suspected deaths as a result of heroin. 

When prescription overdoses and other drugs are factored in, there were 77 drug-related deaths in Madison County in 2015.  Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn tells The Big Z most heroin addicts start out abusing prescription drugs.

He says education efforts appear to be starting to have an impact, as age groups that have heard the message of the dangers of the drug account for fewer deaths in 2015.
