The Alton Fire Department is continuing its project of getting all residents of the city to get their street number placed in a highly visible place on their house. The campaign called "Help Us Find You" identified numerous houses without numbers when the count began in September. The department is placing numbers on the houses that were identified earlier.
Deputy Fire Chief Mark Harris says locating a home quickly can save precious minutes when someone is in need of help, and they are about half-way through their list of homes that need numbers.
In some cases, the homeowners did not know their numbers were missing. Harris says the help of donations of cash by the Optimist and Exchange Clubs combined with St. Peter's Hardware selling the numbers at-cost helped make this project possible.
