The Mt. Olive Police Station and City Hall will be rebuilt, in part thanks to a grant from a local business. The building was damaged earlier this year by an EF-2 tornado, but Georgia-Pacific Packaging in Mt. Olive has stepped up with a $5,000 donation to go toward a new home for the police and city government. This fundraising is a result of efforts put forth by the Macoupin Economic Development Partnership.
The Partnership announced shortly after the May 20 twister that it would help gather resources to rebuild the part of the city hit by the brief but powerful twister. Partnership Executive Director Shari Albrecht says the town has been hard at work coming back from the damage.
The MEDP hopes to save as many buildings as possible in the area, as many have historical significance, but she says they are searching for funding to bring down two other buildings that were damaged beyond repair. The tornado touched down on the west end of the business district and traveled the entire length of Main Street.
