A number of businesses in Mount Olive took damage Monday night from an EF-2 tornado. The Macoupin Economic Development Partnership is offering help to those businesses. The business district has several wood and brick buildings, and has the historic small town downtown feel, according to Shari Albrecht, Executive Director of the Partnership.
She says some of the buildings can be saved, while others will be lost forever.
The National Weather Service reports the twister was on the ground for about a minute, traveling a mile or so. The storm may have caused a fire that destroyed three buildings in the downtown area on North Street, but no injuries were reported. The storm also blew in eight fire bay doors at the Mount Olive Fire Department.
