Hearing loss can occur at any age – even babies. If left untreated it can lead to language development problems. Approximately three out of every 1,000 children in the U.S. are born deaf or hearing impaired, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
Newborn hearing screening programs are used to test hearing at an early age, according to Suzanne Pokrzywinski, audiologist at SIU School of Medicine. She explains some causes of hearing loss.

Hearing loss in babies also can be caused by white noise machines if they are too loud or left running too long. Pokrzywinski, says children should be screened if they show signs of hearing difficulty.
