This weekend, police will begin cracking down on illegal parking in spaces reserved for those with disabilities. It’s part of the Illinois Secretary of State’s office’s annual sting operation targeting those misusing or forging disability placards. Secretary of State Jesse White says he has little sympathy for those who will receive a ticket.
“I think it’s a violation of all laws of human decency when you take advantage of a program that’s been set aside for those individuals that are truly in need,” White said.
Police will be conducting parking stings at malls in Carbondale, Champaign, Fairview Heights, Marion, Rockford, Springfield, Oak Brook, Orland Park, Peoria, Schaumburg, and Chicago. Last year, more than 160 citations were handed out to violators. First-time offenders will have their driver’s license suspended for six months and have to pay a $500 fine.
