Less than a week since the announcement the U.S. Steel plant in Granite City would be “temporarily” idled, a state lawmaker is asking his colleagues to support a bill that could address the problem. State Senator Bill Haine (D-Alton) is sponsoring a bill in Springfield asking the Senate to formally ask the United States government to place tariffs on what is described as cheap foreign steel.
Haine tells The Big Z the Chinese are behind most of the “low-cost, low-quality” steel that is being dumped around the world, including the United States, and some European countries are putting tariffs on the steel.

Haine says the fact that President Obama is a former Senator from Illinois may help in getting the tariffs put in place. He says Governor Bruce Rauner has also offered to reach out to his contacts within the steel industry in an effort to help.
