A Wood River woman now has her husband’s awards earned during his service in the Pacific theater in World War II. Lonnie Smith was honorably discharged from the Marines at the age of 23, but never received the medals he earned during the war. He died in April 2013, but his widow, Fern, was presented with the medals this week by state Senator Bill Haine (D-Alton).
He says the process began when she talked to a family friend who is a member of the Illinois Patriot Guard.

Haine says he had the honor of presenting Fern with The Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, China Service Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal that her husband earned serving our country.
