The Illinois Senate is expected to pass a gay marriage bill this week, but that doesn't sit well with State Senator Bill Haine. The Alton Democrat says the issue is too important to push through the lame duck session. Rather, he would prefer it to be brought up during the spring, when there is more time to discuss it on a statewide basis.
Haine fears if this bill is passed, it would damage the institution of marriage.
The bill is getting some high-profile support. "Modern Family" star Jesse Tyler Ferguson made the rounds with Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon on Wednesday, urging people to contact their lawmakers about supporting a proposal to legalize same sex marriage. Haine is also concerned about a gun bill being pushed by some Chicago lawmakers that could further restrict gun rights, even in light of a recent appellate court decision demanding a concealed-carry law in Illinois.
