The Alton City Council is heading into late summer with a small workload in preparation for its next meeting. With mostly housekeeping issues making up the next Committee of the Whole agenda to be dealt with at the August 22nd meeting, one order of business could pave the way for a move and expansion of a firearms business.
Piasa Armory has been located on the downtown end of Broadway for a number of years, and a resolution will come before the Alton Plan Commission on September 6 will ask for a special use permit that would allow the business to relocate to 3685 East Broadway at the former Nissan dealership. With the move, the plan is also to build a gun range. Following the plan commission hearing, the matter will come before the City Council for final approval. In other City Council business, the mayor accepted the resignation of former Alton School District Superintendent Dr. Ken Spells from the Community Relations Commission and appointed in his place Interim Superintendent Mark Cappell.
