It’s cold and snowy in Chicago, but a group of people are gathered on Federal Plaza to call for universal background checks on all gun purchases. Organizing for Action-Illinois and a coalition of partner organizations gathered in the plaza overlooked by the offices of U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Mark S. Kirk (R-Ill.) calling for the elimination of gun sale loopholes and the national implementation of universal background checks.

“We think that they are doing a good initial step. We want them to do more,” said Organizing for Action spokeswoman Nellie Sires. “We would really love to see them take a really strong leadership position and do as much as they can to make this their priority to actually get this on the floor, get a vote on it and get it through.” The group is calling on the senators to put pressure on other senators to support universal background checks.
