A retired state employee and veteran from Springfield says the partial shutdown of the federal government is hitting him. “The Veterans’ Administration is saying that if this goes on much longer, I won’t get my retirement for the month of November, I won’t get my Social Security, I won’t get my disability that I’m drawing from the VA,” said Mike Woodcox. “Social Security should be figured on what the gross is, not on” inflation, he added.

Woodcox participated in a rally outside the federal building in Springfield Tuesday noon hour. Organizing for Action Springfield and Illinois Fair Share were among the groups organizing it. Fair Share director Ryan Canney says Illinois Republicans aren't the problem, pointing to retired U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson as someone who made a habit of going against the grain without regard to whether it was expedient or popular.
