You’ve heard of Blue Ribbon schools. Soon you’ll see some Green Ribbon schools – the ones that are the most environmentally friendly. Illinois State Board of Education spokeswoman Mary Fergus says Illinois is one of 33 states participating in a federal program to recognize the schools which do the most to reduce their carbon footprints.

The criteria include student engagement, “not only in terms of teaching them everyday practices, but we need them to develop new and innovative means toward a more sustainable earth,” says Fergus. The state will choose four schools to send along to a national competition.
