Alton NAACP President James Gray challenged Alton Mayor Brant Walker to hire more African American’s in the city police department and also within the rest of the city. Gray spoke out at this week’s Alton City Council meeting, challenging Walker to look within the city of Alton for candidates instead of bringing in others from the outside.

Walker says as mayor, there are a limited number of hires he can make – the rest are hired through the Civil Service Board. Two of the three members of that board are African-American, which Walker says he appointed.
