A facility that would provide healthy, locally and organically grown produce to low-income families in the area could become a reality later this year if a recently launched fundraiser is successful. Alton Main Street Executive Director Sara McGibany says the Grassroots Grocery fundraiser began Monday and that store will open as soon as they raise $50,000.
As a cooperative, the store will be open to the public but will also have memberships. She says the cost to be a member is $100.

McGibany says Grassroots Grocery will be located in a building on Ridge Street because that area has been identified as a “food desert” according to USDA standards. For more information or to make a donation you can visit http://www.grassrootsgrocery.org
