Coal research at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale is getting a federal boost in the form of a $300,000 grant.
University spokesman Rod Sievers says the SIU Clean Coal Research Center is where “a lot of top notch scientists and researchers … have been looking for ways to burn coal cleaner for many years.”
The project will be to find ways to protect heavy equipment from damage while it handles the coal. It’s part of $2.7 million worth of awards from the U.S. Department of Energy.
