A Granite City man was sentenced to more than a year in prison Friday in federal court on charges related to the offense of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. 50-year-old Lonnie C. Mathenia was sentenced to 15 months in prison; five years' supervised release, and has been ordered to pay a $100 special assessment. He had been arrested three times prior to his most current arrest in 2014 and 2015, once for hitchhiking and twice for trespassing. He failed to register as a sex offender in Kansas, Colorado, and Arkansas, where his arrests occured. This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice.
