Gov. Pat Quinn was on hand Thursday in Chicago to light the state’s holiday tree. Beginning a new tradition, Quinn invited Gold Star families to hang ornaments in memory of their loved ones lost in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs director Erica Borggren says it’s important to remember those serving overseas this holiday season.

“During the holidays it is especially important to remember those who sacrifice their all to protect us,” Borggren said. “As we gather with our loved ones to celebrate the holiday season, we encourage the people of Illinois to keep our service members in their thoughts and prayers.” Homemade holiday cards from children were collected at the tree lighting, which Quinn will hand-deliver to wounded service members when he visits Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany later this month. He’s encouraging schools across the state to participate in the annual card drive. More info on the card drive: www.operationhomefront.org
