Crime in some categories is on the way down in Alton, some are up, so it is a good news / bad news report, according to the Chief of Police. Theft numbers were up slightly from last year, while assault and battery was down 28%. That follows a 38.5% decrease last year. Murders doubled, from 2 in 2009 to 4 in 2010. Overall, there was an increase in reported crimes by 1.8%.
Police Chief David Hayes says total crimes reported last year totaled 1551, compared to 1523 in 2010.
As for the bad news, property crime such as burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft and arson rose by 4%, compared to a 3.7% drop nationally.
