Alton's Wadlow and Rock Spring Golf Courses may be closing sooner rather than later. The golf course management team has notified the city it wishes to end its agreement as of April 1. Alton Golf Management entered into an agreement several years ago, but has apparently found the business to be unrewarding from a financial standpoint, according to Alton Mayor Tom Hoechst.
Hoechst says if something can be put together, it will likely happen within the next 10 days. The previous administration had considered selling the property, rumored to be for Wal-Mart or another box-store, but instead decided to turn over operation of the golf course to Alton Golf Management. At the time the city got out of the golf business, it was costing city hall about a quarter-million dollars a year to keep the two courses afloat.
