The City of Alton could be just a few meetings away from finding a new operator for the Spencer T. Olin Golf Course at Gordon Moore Park. The council voted last night to suspend the rules and publish a notification of the city’s intent to enter into an agreement with a company headed by local investors Vern Van Hoy and Tom Long.
Van Hoy is already involved in running the Rock Spring Golf Course for the city, and the two men recently purchased majority ownership of Rolling Hills Golf Course in Godfrey. Alton Mayor Brant Walker stressed that while it’s not yet a done deal, the city needs to find a solution so there is no down time between operators. Currently Century Golf Partners out of Texas has been running the course since 2005, but indicated last year that it did not plan to renew its lease with the city, which expires in 2018. Spencer T. Olin Golf Course is marking its 25th anniversary this season, and was designed by famed golfer Arnold Palmer.
