The Illinois treasurer made $73,000 for the state in the most recent unclaimed property auction, and one item broke recent records for bringing in the most. The treasurer’s office said 8,000 pieces of coin, jewelry and baseball cards were auctioned. The winning bid for one piece, an Engelhard 10-ounce gold bar, was more than $12,000.
The treasurer’s office says that was the highest amount bid on a single item auctioned off by his office in the past four years. The most recent auction also included a 1967 Mickey Mantle Topps baseball card that was part of a set of cards going for more than $460. Treasurer Michael Frerichs says he prefers to find the rightful owner of unclaimed property, but items held for 10 years are eligible for auction. For the entire calendar year of 2015, the treasurer’s office says his office has raised about $390,000 through the auctions.
