Godfrey officials will be taking a closer look at how to deal with what it calls habitual offenders of its zoning ordinances. Accumulation of rubbish or garbage is prohibited, and the parking or storage of boats, trailers and RV's is prohibited in a front or side yard. There are also laws concerning the mowing of lawns, but some property owners have figured out how to skirt the system.

Assistant Village Attorney Emily Johnson says if they fix the problem the day before going to court, or if they explain they are unable to perform needed work to the property due to financial or health issues, the compassionate judges in Madison County will usually find in favor of the property owner.

Johnson comments

There is one property in particular that has been issued more than a dozen citations over the past decade. Village trustees are hoping to come up with an ordinance that has more "teeth" to enforce violations.
