Union Pacific Railroad will be closing Pearl Street in Godfrey at the Union Pacific Railroad tracks on Friday.  The closure is expected to last through Monday May 9th. The railroad will be removing the existing tracks and installing new tracks at this crossing as part of the continuing work to upgrade the tracks for higher-speed rail service.

Godfrey Mayor Mike McCormick tells The Big Z this is the start of higher-speed rail work in the village.

McCormick says they are not allowed to shut all four crossings at the same time.  That is the result of an aborted plan from a few years ago when the railroad was doing crossing maintenance.  Public safety and traffic flow concerns were raised, resulting in the railroad backing off of that plan.
